Hi Adam!
Good idea. Anything that can help by sharing experiences is great. I will write an article on how we tried to tackle problems we encountered in SAFe sometime in the future. At the end of the article, I did write down some actions with some hope it might be useful for others. It might also be very interesting to know what we tried and how we failed ;)
To be clear, my intent is not to spread hate on SAFe. I wrote, "So is SAFe worse than Prince2 or RUP? For me, it is same same but different. I learned after twenty years that teams have a surprising way of finding ways to deliver despite system challenges. You have to learn to work the system.". Basically, if you follow that pattern of thinkiing, you could say I bash every single methodology.
For me, Scrum was a Rosetta stone helping me to fit all the pieces I had together. For others, Scrum is seen as the destroyer of Agile thinking. My personal reflection is that maybe if you have the pieces, the framework gives you the structure. If you don't have the pieces yet, perhaps it is more harmful than helpful?
To succeed with scaling in an Agile context; you need to look at the context, culture, and current situation. There is not a silver bullet or framework that can make you Agile. The framework can help guide your thoughts. To many believe that if you follow the "rituals" of a framework, success will come automatically.
For me, SAFe is too much, perhaps because I am not smart enough or have not seen the light yet. Ask me again in a year or so.
